How can Action Research become the "catalyst" for meaningful innovation?

Description

Action research is a methodology that emphasises the practical application of research to solve real-world problems. Through collaboration between researchers and practitioners, action research can facilitate the identification and resolution of challenges in various fields. By focusing on collaborative inquiry, experimentation, and reflection, action research can help organisations uncover opportunities for meaningful innovation that will work in the real context. Nevertheless, while action research can be an effective tool for promoting innovation, there are several factors that can hinder its ability to serve as a catalyst for change.

In this webinar, we will discuss:

  1. the key features of action research that make it a catalyst for innovation,
  2. the factors that hinder action research from being an effective tool to promote innovation, and
  3. the possible ways to overcome the challenges of conducting a high-impact action research.

Overall, this session gives insights into how action research can be a powerful tool for driving meaningful innovation. By engaging in collaborative inquiry, experimentation, and reflection, organisations can identify and address real-world challenges, while also creating a culture of innovation that supports ongoing learning and improvement.

Universiti Sains Malaysia

Dr Amirul Shah Md Shahbudin is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia. He completed his PhD in Accounting and Finance from the University of Lancaster, United Kingdom, in 2006. His PhD thesis, entitled ‘The Implementation of Target Costing as a Tool for Change Within an Organisation: An Action Research Study of Nestle Rowntree Division’ was an innovative piece of research that combined academic theory with ‘consultancy’ work. This formed the basis of a performance improvement exercise that resulted in cost savings within the researched organisation. His research interests are in the areas of Management, Accounting and Control, Behavioural Accounting, and Performance Management and Measurement.

Feminist-informed Teacher Action Research

Description
In this international webinar series, Professor Maguire will introduce participants to the principles and practices of a feminist-informed approach to Teacher Action Research. Participants will examine applications of this framework to their teacher-action research projects. The framework and applications are useful for robust teacher research regardless of one’s identification with feminist movements. Afterall, all people are gendered and our work as teachers is informed and shaped by the intersection of our many identities. Consistent with the overarching purpose of action research as a transformative approach to knowledge creation, we examine how we can use methods informed by theory to improve and re-vision our teaching and learning practices.
Speaker
Professor Emeritus Patricia Maguire

Professor Emeritus Patricia Maguire

Western New Mexico University, United States

Patricia Maguire is Professor Emeritus of Education and Counseling, Western New Mexico University. Her teaching, research, publications, and activism focus on the interconnections among feminisms, participatory and action research, and social justice. For 25 years, Patricia was Chair of the WNMU-Gallup Graduate Studies Center. Situated in rural New Mexico, the Center served one of the most culturally rich, linguistically and ethnically diverse, yet economically poorest communities in the USA. Inspired by bell hooks and Paulo Freire, Pat believes the classroom is a space of transformative possibilities. Maguire’s ground breaking book, Doing participatory research: a feminist approach (1987) – based on Participatory Research (PR) with Diné (Navajo) women – was one of the earliest feminist critiques of participatory action research. She developed a feminist-informed approach to Teacher Action Research to help educators focus both inwardly on their intersectional identities and classroom practices as well as outwardly on the conditions that shape and influence their students’ lives. Through action research, teachers are encouraged to revision the purposes and improve the practices of education, beginning in their own classrooms and schools. She explores with teachers what happens when they engage in action research with transformative intentions. In recognition of knowledge democracy, she has an open-access website of her life’s work related to feminist PAR/AR.

Action Research and Narrative Inquiry

Description
In this international webinar series, Professor Gary Barkhuizen will introduce the basic principles and methods of narrative inquiry. Stories are central to narrative inquiry – collecting them and analysing them in order to answer any questions or puzzles researchers might have. But what is it about stories that makes them so powerful and useful in the process of doing research? How do we work with stories to achieve our research aims? These are the questions that he will address in the webinar. He will also make connections between narrative inquiry and the methods associated with action research.
